Fenn School Acceptable Use of Technology Policy

Fenn students have many opportunities to use technology to enrich their learning.  As in all areas of life at school, students are expected to demonstrate responsibility, respect, and good judgment when using computers and other technology.

In order to use school technology, Fenn students agree to accept the following responsibilities:

  • Using technology at school for educational purposes and searching only appropriate Internet sites
  • Not divulging personal or family information over the Internet
  • Not disrupting the use of technology or the network by others
  • Treating technology with care; never modifying programs or changing the configuration of files; never introducing viruses or bugs into the system
  • Respecting files that belong to others; never changing or erasing the work of others; respecting copyright laws governing software

In the spirit of Sua Sponte, each division of the school has a specific policy of supervision regarding the use of technology.  Together, these policies reflect the expectation that boys’ understanding of appropriate use will develop over time.

  • Lower School – 4th and 5th grade students are permitted to use technology only with the direct supervision of a teacher.
  • Middle School – Boys in 6th and 7th grade must receive specific permission from a teacher in order to use technology and the Internet, but they are not required to be supervised.
  • Upper School – 8th and 9th graders may exercise their own judgment and are trusted to use technology appropriately at school without direct supervision or specific permission from a teacher.

At the beginning of each school year, students and parents are required to sign an Acceptable Use Agreement based on the responsibilities outlined above.  Failure to adhere to these responsibilities may result in loss of computer privileges and/or other disciplinary action, including appropriate legal action.  The school reserves the right to monitor student usage of the Internet and to review material in student files and accounts to determine whether specific uses of the network are inappropriate.
